National Safe Boating Week in Lake County
Sure the weather today doesn’t give you the hunger for boating, but this week, we kick of National Safe Boating Week from May 16 – May 22 in Lake County.
The 2015 campaign is simply ‘Wear it.’ Wear your safety jacket when you’re going on a joy ride.
This week is designated to ensure the safety of all boaters across the state of Illinois.
Some of the new laws implemented this year were: People born after 1998 can’t operate a motorboat with over 10 horse power unless they received a Boating Safety Certificate, and Operating Under the Influence (OUI), no watercraft driver can be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
These laws will be enforced in 2016.
During this edition of National Safe Boating Week, the National Safe Boating Council implemented a Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day.
“At the National Safe Boating Council, we believe life jacket wear is the simplest strategy to stay safe while enjoying your favorite recreational water activity,” said National Safe Boating Council Executive Director Rachel Johnson CAE. “According to recent U.S. Coast Guard statistics, drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of all boating fatalities in 2014. Of those, 84 percent were reported as not wearing their life jackets.”
Since 2011, according to the safe boating campaign, boating fatalities have gone down significantly. In 2013, there was only a recorded 560 fatalities related accident as compared to 758 posted in 2011.
The next boating safety class is scheduled for June 20 at the Fox Lake Community Center. Certified Instructors with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary “USCGA” will conduct the course covering the basics of boating safety, equipment and requirements, navigation, motorboat registration and titling, emergency measures and the Federal and State boating laws.
After completion and a successful passing grade on the exam, prospective boaters will receive a Certificate of Competency.
