Beat the sun with a top-rated sunscreen
Going boating on the lakes and waterways of Lake County? Treat your sunscreen as essential safety equipment. Remember, on the water you’re not only exposed to the sun’s skin-damaging radiation from above, but also from reflections.
This year, a leading consumer magazine tested over 65 sunscreens with an SPF of 30—which is the minimum recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. Their findings: Chemical-based sunscreens out-performed “natural” or mineral-based formulas. Lotion-based sunscreens are typically more effective than sprays (although certain sprays still rank on the list). There is also no such thing as “waterproof” sunscreen!
The best way to keep your skin protected is to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours, no matter what sunscreen you’re using. To be sure of getting an SPF 30-level protection, you should use a top-rated chemical sunscreen with an SPF of at least 40. Coverage should include all exposed skin, especially the ears and the back of the neck and legs.
Seek out shade when you’re on a boat during peak sun hours, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. In addition, SPF-rated clothing offers enhanced sun protection.
