The Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the Lake County boating season. And on the gorgeous Chain O’Lakes, it also means that The Key West of the Midwest,” Blarney Island, is open for a spectacular summer of fun. This holiday weekend is packed with live music day and night, so check Blarney’s calendar. And remember that next Thursday evening, May 30, is the weekly Thunder on the Chain drag boat races. Some boats reach jaw-dropping speeds of over 150 miles per hour!

In case you’ve never been to Blarney Island, it’s the most unique bar/restaurant/club you’ll find anywhere. Why? Because it’s in the middle of a lake – one mile from shore – and accessible only by boat. You can bring your own watercraft, or just take the shuttle boat from the lakeside Port of Blarney – a destination of its own, with a year-round restaurant, bar and patio. There’s a new Caribbean-style menu this year, so check it out. Blarney Island is open Thursdays through Sundays. Shuttle boat service begins in the late afternoon.
